I saw two delightful acts of incredible stupidity this weekend, and I must share.
1: I was cutting through a parking lot to get to a pub, and some tourist had locked their yappy chihuahua in the car. He was on the dash barking ferociously at me. If thay windsheild hadn't been there, I would have gotten a very small bite by a very small dog. Ouch. The thing continued to viciously snarl and bark at me, and I giggled to myself, taunting him in a way to come get me. Unfortunately as I rounded the side of the van, a much bigger, more gigantic St. Bernard type pitbull thing started barking and joining in on the hunt --and the window was wide open. I squeeled a bit and hopped further away, and the St. Bernard thing started scratching his paws down the side of the van. Both dogs are going insane by this point, and then the car alarm went off. It was marvelous. Stupid tourists!
2: I was walking uptown to get my hangover KFC, and this woman picked up her screaming baby from the back seat of a car -- grasping it like a football underneath the arms, and no doubt exaggerating the distress the poor thing was in -- then swung the baby and used it to slam the car door shut. Then she roughly put the little guy in the front seat, plunking him down. I laughed, but then thought about how truly sad the display of parenting I had just seen was.

A new years resolution seven months later
It's more than halfway through 2010. And I didn't really make a resolution this year. Maybe it was just to be happier. Check. But today I drove up to the Athabasca Falls, a beautiful waterfall at 23 kilometres outside of Jasper. I didn't enjoy myself though, because there were 14 million tourists there, all stumbling around in my way.
When Josh and I were on our trip, we camped at the Colorado National Monument. It was amazing. It was so quiet and awe-inspiring, save for a couple of Germans blasting classical music. There were moments when we sat high up on one of the sandstone cliffs, not speaking. It was the perfect day.
The next stop on our trip was the Arches National Park. I had looked it up before we left, and was really excited to see the natural arches formed by erosion. We had an awesome night in Moab where we camped at a private campground with a pool. I cooked some steak (which Josh was extremely happy about) and we had a nice midnight swim and hot tub. It was lovely.
The next morning I made some eggs, and we had left over barbecue chicken calzone. Also yummy. Then we headed up to the Arches park, and realized we were one of thousands who had the same plan that day. The park was beautiful, but the short walks up to the insane arches were full of people, and screaming kids. It made me grumpy and we weren't able to enjoy it as much as the national monument.
What I'm saying is that I really love being alone in places where you can just be quiet and enjoy it. I want to be able to do that again. Therefore, my middle of the year resolution is to put some miles on my running shoes Josh made me buy. They really are too white.
Love,
Annalee.

Dear Tourists, give me your overpriced cameras
Today I had what I am assuming is a typical friday at the Fitzhugh, because this is how it's gone every Friday I've worked so far: everyone I'm supposed to be interviewing for the week's stories, skips town and I have endless conversations with people's voicemail. Then I get fed up and go wandering around for stand-alone photos.
Today I was on one of those wanders, only I actually had an event. It was a barbecue for the victims of the recent explosion at the Pyramid Riding Stables. I headed down there, and the town's mascot Jasper the Bear was wandering around trying to get people to go grab a burger. So I took my shots, got the names I needed and headed off in search of Jasper. He was giving high fives to kids and whatnot, I thought it would be a good photo. So I finally found Jasper, almost back at the office and I began lining up my shot when -- some tourists that do not speak english start swarming me and pointing frantically at their very similar (but more expensive and better) Canon DSLR with at least a 70-200 mm lens on it. They were literally blocking my shot now so I had to attend to the group now that they were pointing and trying their best to spit out in English: "How do we turn the flash on?"
Now, I may not be an expert, but I'll tell you what I was shooting on. First of all I was in manual, shooting at about 1/2500 to 1/3200 of a second, depending on whether the clouds were covering the sun or not. My ISO was at 400. What this means, is that THE FREAKING SUN WAS OUT. So these tourists, were attempting to shoot in auto on this very expensive camera with the flash out, in + 26 C weather with the sun shining down on us. Now, I'll admit, it was a bit smokey because of the wildfires in Kamloops, but the bottom line is, when you're outside, you don't need a fucking flash, unless it's dark out or you are, I don't know, shooting a fashion portrait.
So I tried to explain to these women how to put the flash up anyway, I figured with them speaking whatever language it was, I wouldn't get very far with my five-minute photography lesson. It turns out the camera was infact broken. I demonstrated on my camera, which opens the flash with the same button on the left hand side of the camera body, below the pop-up flash. I switched my camera to auto, and showed it pop up, and they couldn't figure it out, so I tried to slowly say, "It's broken," while pointing to the flash. They didn't understand, but one lady dug her nail under the flash and it popped up. They thanked me in broken english and wandered off.
It was at this point that I realized Jasper the Bear was about 100 metres down the street. Thanks guys.
I was so frustrated by this event, because here I am shooting with my barely newsprint-worthy lens, and these tourists can afford these crazy expensive cameras, and they haven't even bothered to read the first page of their instruction manual.
I have no idea what they ended up needing that flash for. But in the future, if you want to prevent me freaking out and stealing your lens, learn how to use at least the auto function. There really is no effort to it.
Love,
Annalee.

Six toes, and no morals
Some workers in our lovely conservative government got caught today, for editing a Wikipedia article and inserting insults about opposition Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff. Here is the entry, on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II entry:
On 16 July 2010, the Canadian government announced that it would buy 65 F-35s to replace the 80 CF-18s for $9 billion ($16B with all ancillary costs included) starting in 2016. Opposition Liberal Party Leader Michael Ignatieff, who has six toes on each foot, immediately called for the House of Commons defence committee to reconvene as soon as possible and examine the purchase."
Are you serious? Are there a bunch of teenagers running our country? I did shit like this when I was in middle school. The whole issue surrounds the conservatives spending $9 billion to upgrade their aging fleet of CF-18 Hornets, which they did without launching a call for the lowest bidder. Ignatieff obviously disagreed, becase that's what the opposition do, and urged them to reconvene to talk about it in parliament. God forbid our elected members of the house should go back to work for a week during the summer recess.
The thing is, the Liberals are the ones who invested money into Lockheed Martin in the first place to build the F-35s. While that investment wasn't a bond to purchase them in the end once they were complete, it did kind of ensure that was the path we were going to go.
The thing that frustrates me about all this, is how government deals with something so simple. We need to replace our Hornets, see this article. Why don't we just freaking do it already?
I am totally soured on this thing we call democracy here in Canada. Can you name any important decision that has been mad in the last, like five years? The only one I can recall is when Jean Cretien said hell no when George Bush asked Canadians to join the war in Iraq. That was the only decision the federal government has made recently that I think has actually made a change in Canada's lifestyle, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't within the five-year timeline.
Why doesn't our government just do their jobs, instead of taking years to fight things and then decide to throw the country into another election in a failed attempt to get a majority in the house?
I am so frustrated. I am no longer a Liberal. I don't support that party, or the Conservatives or the NDP. I am a 22-year-old who is struggling under the burden of student loans the government is making money off of. I work, really hard, and the politicians I voted for in the last election have done nothing for me.
I want something done to change any of the social problems we have here. They are out there, and while Ignattief and Harper fight over a couple of fighter jets we obviously need, there are people going hungry, having crimes committed against them, going overseas for MS treatments that could easily be done here and so much more.
Why does it take so long for anything positive to happen?

Issue 3 on the way
So I have so many photos I've been taking lately, that I can't wait to post, but I try not to scoop myself. I have been shooting bumblebees, rainbows, rivers, basketball players, kids splashing in water from a firetruck, and much more. My rainbow shot didn't get used, and my bear photo did run already!

Hopefully I will have more photos to upload after this week's issue. It's been a crazy week. We have tons of stuff going on, and on Friday our editor is leaving us. I'm not too excited about that, we have a good little work unit going on. I hope the new editor, whenever we get one, is just as fun!
I really, really, really need a new lens for my camera. That bear shot would have been so much better with a telephoto. I'm struggling with what to save up for, a trip to see Josh or bring him here, or that new lens. Not too sure what I'm going to do yet. Mom says I should try to get a credit card that does Aeroplan miles or something, and then run my entire financial life through it. I'm going to see what CIBC has to say. Or maybe not CIBC. I hate them.
I'm on my lunch break right now. I've run out of any sort of snacky type food, and have to cook anything I want to eat. I had scrambled eggs on toast for breaky and a grilled cheese. Both took me almost a half a freaking hour to cook on my stupid stove top burners. Damn you Parks Canada for not letting me have a real stove!
Anyway, none of this is interesting. I'm just trying to update more often. I'm sure none of it is good!
Love,
Annalee.

Love you long time
Are your parents still together?
Nope.
Who was the last person to put their arm around you?
I guess Mom, when she hugged me goodbye after Jfest. Actually it was more like she got sick of me and kicked me out of her house because I was being a pain in the ass. At least I got a hug.
What if you had a baby with the last person you texted?
Luckily that was Josh. It would be a fiasco, I imagine.
Have you ever seen the movie The Number 23 starring Jim Carrey? If so, did it freak you out at all?
Haven't seen it.
What were you up to at 11:00 PM last night?
Drunkkkk. Making friends in Jasper!
Does anyone call you baby?
Yea. <3
Are you in a good mood?
I'm pretty lazy, but content at the moment.
Where did you last sleep other than your house?
Mom's house, which is kinda like my house since I still have junk there. So I guess Ally's.
When was the last time you saw your mom?
Last weekend.
Are you the same person as you were at the beginning of 2009?
God no. I was a mess at the beginning of 2009. Now I am unbelieveably happy.
Do you think you will be in a relationship in the next three months?
I already ammmmm.
Are you close with your mother?
She's like my BFF.
Does your head hurt?
It did, but my hangover is wearing off.
Is there any emotion you're trying to avoid right now?
For some reason drinking makes me feel unreasonably guilty the next morning. I would prefer not to feel that.
Last time you had butterflies in your stomach?
Awhile, I think.
Does anything hurt on your body?
My feet a bit from wearing my leopardy heels. Ah, the things I go through for fashion.
Have you ever punched a hole in the wall?
hahaha, no, but I did punch Scott once and then he punched a hole in the wall. So I was the cause of a hole in the wall.
What were you doing at 2:00 AM this morning?
Trying to get myself organized for bed I think.
Could you go a day without eating?
Absolutely not. I love food. Meal time is my favourite time.
Do you know anyone that smokes weed?
Tons. I don't myself though.
How long does it take you to shower?
Five minutes or so.
Can you do the splits?
Hells no. I am too gangly.
What was the last thing you drank?
Raspberry Crystal Light. Yummm.
How has the week been?
Really good! Busy, with lots of exploring inbetween.
Are you slowly drifting away from someone?
I don't think so. I am slowly trying to drift closer physically to Josh! 2,500 kilometres behind me from my move to Jasper!
Are you currently frustrated with a boy?
No, he is lovely. I am frustrated we aren't able to see each other for a long time though.
Are you nice to everyone?
I hope so.
Are you wearing any make up right now?
Some from last night I'm sure.
What is the last non-alcoholic drink you had?
Crystal Light...we went over this.
What was the best thing that happened today?
I finally got off my ass and cleaned up my living room, kitchen and bathroom. Still waiting on the willpower to pick the clothes off the floor of my room.
Have any recent regrets?
Nope.
Do you get high a lot?
Nope.
Did you sleep alone last night?
Yes. I miss cuddling/pushing Josh off the bed.
What do you currently hear right now?
Obi Wan Kenobi. The Empire Strikes back, hehehe.
What are/were you doing at twelve this afternoon?
Sleeping. It was lovely. I haven't slept in in months.
Have you ever felt replaced?
I guess so.
Would you prefer a thunderstorm or for it to be snowing?
Thunderstorm, as long as I'm in good company.
Did you have a good day yesterday?
It was awesome! I "worked" aka did a garden tour and ran through the spray from a fire truck. Fun!
If you were offered a shot of whiskey right this second, would you accept?
I'd consider it. I'm not a whiskey drinker though. Now tequila....
Do you think people talk about you?
Sure, I hope it's all good.
Are you open about your feelings or closed off?
I think I'm open. I am now. I learned that this spring.
You have to get a piercing, what do you get?
My eyebrow needs to be re-done, but I'd get my lip if I had to get a new one.
What color is the shirt your wearing right now?
I'm wearing a black dress.
Will this weekend be a good one?
Well it's Sunday, but next weekend is going to be AWESOME. Floating the Bow River, hanging out with Ally, finally chasing down Sam Hanna and Tina, and a long weekend. Can't wait!
What was the last movie you watched?
Cop Out. It kinda sucked. I hate Tracy Morgan. Now I'm watching Star Wars.
Are you excited for anything?
Next weekend!
Is your room messy or clean?
Really messy. I hate it!
Have you ever had someone over without your parents knowing?
Sure, but my mom is like a fox. She's knows everything.
Do you drink ice tea?
Occasionally. I bought some from my neighbours the other day. It was 25 cents, and environmentally friendly, apparently. I like environmentally friendly ice tea...much better than the non-environmentally friendly kind.
What will you do later?
I have to cover a Fred Eaglesmith concert.
Who was the last person to message you?
Josh. Oh wait, that was a text. Tash then.
Is there someone you want to fight?
No. I've found those that deserve things like that get it in the end.
What was the first thing you did this morning?
Complained.
What did you do last night?
Drank some wine, watched Breaking Bad, talked to Josh then went out and met some people. It was fun.
If your boyfriend or girlfriend was into drugs, would you care?
I would be awfully confused if Josh randomly decided to start smoking crack or something, so yes, I would care.
What was the last reason you went to the doctor for?
Prescription refill I think.
Do you feel comfortable with answering personal questions?
I'm fairly open. hahaha, I just did the 2006 Canadian census to write a column about it, and it didn't kill me. The government wanted to know what I farm, and how many bathrooms my dwelling had. It was pretty deep. I feel like me and old Stephen are pretty tight now.
Are you shy?
Yes, but everyday it gets a little better. I have to be outgoing as a journalist. Getting into this career has changed me a lot.
Do you like being home alone or does it freak you out?
I love alone time, but would like to up my Josh-time.
If you could push one person off of a mountain, who would it be?
Again, I believe in karma! It'll happen on its own!
Do you have any bruises on you?
No, but I have a bug bite on my chest that is really itchy!
How's your mood?
Fantastic. A little hungry though.
Is anything wrong with your eyes?
No?
In the last year have you gotten close to someone you never thought you would?
A random Florida boy living in Alaska, lol.
Are you in a good mood?
YES. We already talked about this!
What is your normal weekend?
I don't know yet, let me settle into Jasper life and I'll let you know.
Do you like to wear sweatpants?
I prefer no pants if I'm lounging, lol.
Are you wearing them right now?
Nope, a little dress.
Ever been to a summer camp?
No.
Who made fun of you last?
I think Cameron was teasing me about something at work on Friday.
Who was the last person in your bed?
I don't know who the last person in there besides me was. hahaha, probably Justin, Ally and Rick.
If someone was running at you with a knife what would you do?
Run away, I hope.
Ever felt like you're not good enough?
I'm sure I have back when I didn't have confidence.
Has anyone upset you in the last week?
Yea, some drama. I'm over it now though.
Do you miss anyone?
Josh.
Do you think two people can last forever?
Yes.
Does it make you uncomfortable when you receive a compliment?
Kind of. I blush.
When is the next time you'll hug someone?
Probably next weekend when I see Ally, but I really don't schedule these things in.
Is there anything in your past that you'd like to do?
Like, again? Sure. Jump my horse? Hang out with Josh?
Have you ever kissed anyone with a tongue ring?
Yes. Ick. Gross. Foul.
Do you like your life as of now?
I really really love it.
When was the last time you cried?
I can't remember. That's kind of awesome.
How do you feel about the person who text you last?
I love him!
Have you ever driven without a license?
My dad let me drive his truck down the highway once before I got my license. It didn't go well.
How's your heart lately?
Actually it keeps skipping beats. It's really annoying!
What ruined your day today?
hahaha, having to clean up my wine-induced pigsty.
Where would you be at in 5 years?
I don't care, as long as Josh is there.
What are you doing right now?
Watching Star Wars, trying not to eat the fudge I bought for Josh.
What was your last thought before you went to bed last night?
I don't know...I woke up with the lights on, so clearly not thinking.
Could you cry right now?
I am a great actress. Sure.
Do you hate when people call you when you're sleeping?
Kinda. I'm a pretty light sleeper, it always wakes me up.
Love,
Annalee
Nope.

Annalee

Poor Lilo
There was a moment where I felt a sense of satisfaction in Lindsay Lohan going to jail. It was kind of refreshing for a spoiled brat to finally get what she deserved.
But today when she checked into jail for her 90 day sentence (which she'll probably do 22 days of, but still), I saw a girl about a year older than me living out her most embarrassing moment in the full virew of the public, and I felt really bad for her. I know how I can't stand people knowing when I do something I wish I hadn't. If I were living Lindsay's life right now, I wouldn't get through it. I could not handle what she is going through, so for that I feel bad for her.
It's obvious that her parents are completely incapable of raising children properly. Her Dad was on CNN commenting on her walk into prison like it was a football game.
So, I am now in defense of Lindsay Lohan (after trashing her in a previous blog post), because I know myself I would not be strong enough as a person to publically check myself into prison while millions of people were watching, discussing and criticising me.
Love,
Annalee

I love my mountains, like I love my Josh
It has been such an incredible whirlwind since leaving and getting to Jasper. It is so beautiful here, and I've been so insanely busy. Not only with my job, but getting caught up with Josh. I haven't had constant internet in awhile, and getting to talk every night has been amazing.
My job is so much fun. I love it so much. I think I've found my little niche in the journalism world. I get to write as much as I want, and sneak out of the office to go on photo assignments. So far I've shot so much cool stuff, including a search and rescue training session. Today I typed up a little storm and turned out a 1,500 word feature on a horse farm I hung out at yesterday. It was the best work day ever. I know I say that a lot, but I keep having better days than the last one I thought was the best. I could have stretched that feature well past 1,500, but my editor encouraged me to contain myself, lol.
The newsroom is really new and everyone is really nice. I just can't believe how busy a town of 5,000 people is. I love it here so much. I miss Josh a lot though. There are so many cool adventurey things I want to do with him here. I can't wait till he can come and see Jasper.
I'm going to go on a Columbia Icefields Ice Walk this weekend I think. I'm excited! I made sure I was going to be able to do it before I signed up though, of course. I'm not exactly a hiker!
On an unrelated note, I'm really upset about the McCann disappearance, and I check the news and my work email for press releases constantly. I just want them to be found, alive, hopefully. I know that we are not supposed to jump to conclusions and assume that Travis Vader guy did something, but if he doesn know where they are and hasn't told the police, he doesn't deserve any rights. Anyone who preys on an elderly couple is just disgusting.
I don't pray, but with whatever good thoughts and will I have, I really do hope Lyle and Marie McCann are found safe, and get to return home to their children and grandchildren. They seem like the sweetest couple in the world.
Love,
Annalee.
